Types of Smoke Detectors

It is not necessary to have a complete security or fire alarm panel installed to get fire protection for your home. Installation of Smoke Detectors

The threat of fire is highest when the occupants of the living unit are asleep. The fires typically occur in areas located outside of the sleeping area. Smoke sensors should be located in accordance with NFPA 72. The basic location is outside of the sleeping area so that occupants can be notified while they are sleeping in the event of a fire. One smoke sensor is required if there is only one floor. If there is a second floor there should be an additional smoke sensor. This detector should be located near the stairs leading up to the second floor. If there is a basement there should be an additional smoke sensor located at the stairwell leading up to the 1st floor. This is the minimum required amount of smoke sensor but additional detection will provide a more reliable early detection in the event of a fire. The installation of smoke detection in kitchens, attics or garages is not recommended. Additional fire detection can be obtained by the use of heat detectors. Testing your Smoke Detectors

During the initial installation of a new 2Gig-smkt2 detector you will need to test it to ensure proper operation. Once the new smoke sensor is programmed into the control panel you can test the operation by pushing the test button located on the outside of the detector. The detector also incorporates a sensitivity test to let you know if the detector is too sensitive or not sensitive enough. You should test your sensor by using actual smoke that is introduced to the chamber so that the detector can be fully tested. This can easily be done by using canned smoke.

Importance of Working Smoke Detectors

The presence of smoke sensors does not mean that you actually have fire protection. The detectors must be in working order. Death from fire has been reduced by half since 1970. At this point it is estimated that 95 percent of homes have at least one smoke detector. The fact that deaths from fire have been reduced is a testament to smoke detectors saving lives. Unfortunately having a smoke sensor and having a smoke sensor that works are two different things. It is estimated that up to 20 % of homes with smoke sensors do not have them in working condition due to missing or dead batteries.

Smoke Detector False Alarms

Smoke detectors just like any electronic device can be subject to improper operation. There are multiple reasons for these false activations such as low batteries, dirty detectors and improper placement of detectors. If you have a false alarm every time someone takes a shower then it is reasonable to assume that the smoke sensor is placed too close to the shower and the steam is causing a false alarm. This can also happen when the detector is placed too close to the kitchen. Many times the answer to correcting a false alarm situation is to remove the batteries. The correct solution is to find out why the detector is improperly operating and fix it. I cannot imagine having a tragedy resulting from disabling a smoke detector.
